How it is calculated
This is a SIMPLIFIED Caprini. The published score has around forty individually weighted items; this groups them into eight, so a score here will not always equal a score from the full form and it should not be recorded as one. Use the full instrument where the number goes in the notes or drives a protocol. Caprini stratifies VTE risk to decide prophylaxis, and the decision is always balanced against bleeding risk - a high score in a patient who is actively bleeding does not mean anticoagulate. Mechanical prophylaxis is the fallback where pharmacological is contraindicated.
