How it is calculated

Friedewald: LDL = total cholesterol - HDL - (triglycerides / 2.2 in mmol/L, or / 5 in mg/dL). It is invalid when triglycerides exceed 4.5 mmol/L (400 mg/dL) and underestimates LDL at low LDL levels - in both cases a direct measurement is needed. The sample should be fasting.
