How it is calculated

Maddrey discriminant function = 4.6 x (patient PT - control PT) + bilirubin in mg/dL. A value OF 32 or more marks severe disease with roughly 30-50% one-month mortality, and is the traditional threshold for corticosteroids - but active infection, GI bleeding and renal failure must be excluded first, because steroids in those settings do harm.
