How it is calculated
PEWS (Brighton) aggregates behaviour, cardiovascular and respiratory domains, each 0-3, plus 2 each for quarter-hourly nebulisers and persistent post-operative vomiting. A 3 in any single domain escalates on its own. England now uses a national PEWS with age-banded charts. Its purpose is to catch deterioration early, because children compensate well and then decompensate abruptly - a normal blood pressure in a sick child is reassuring only until it is not. A parent saying the child is "not right" overrides a low score.
