How it is calculated

RPI = reticulocyte % x (haematocrit / 45) / maturation factor. The raw reticulocyte percentage misleads in anaemia, because a percentage of a smaller red cell mass looks higher than it is - the correction is the whole point. It separates anaemia the marrow is responding to from anaemia it is not.
