How it is calculated
SIRS: temperature >38 or <36 degrees C, heart rate >90, respiratory rate >20 (or PaCO2 <32 mmHg), white cells >12 or <4 x10^9/L (or >10% bands). Superseded by Sepsis-3 in 2016 for defining sepsis, because it is neither sensitive nor specific - it is included here because it is still widely taught and examined, and still describes the inflammatory response itself.
