How it is calculated

Lung-protective ventilation uses predicted body weight from height and sex, never actual weight - lungs do not grow with obesity, and using actual weight in an obese patient delivers a dangerously large tidal volume. PBW = 50 (male) or 45.5 (female) + 0.91 x (height in cm - 152.4).
