How it is calculated

Urine anion gap = urine sodium + potassium - chloride. It is an indirect measure of urinary ammonium, which cannot be measured directly on a standard panel. In a normal anion gap metabolic acidosis it separates a gastrointestinal cause (negative, "neGUTive") from renal tubular acidosis (positive).
