How it is calculated
Westley score grades croup severity. A single dose of dexamethasone is given at every severity, including mild disease, because it reduces return visits and admission. Do not distress the child - examination that provokes crying worsens the obstruction, and throat inspection is avoided where epiglottitis is possible.
