A screening antibody for autoimmune disease, reported as a titre and pattern. Common in healthy people at low titre, so it means little without a clinical picture.
When it is low
Negative: makes SLE unlikely but does not exclude other connective tissue disease
When it is high
Positive: SLE, Sjögren, scleroderma, autoimmune hepatitis - but also drug-induced lupus from hydralazine, procainamide, isoniazid and minocycline. Positive in up to 15% of healthy people
