An enzyme in liver and muscle. Because it is not liver-specific, a high AST with a normal ALT points towards muscle or heart.

When it is low

Usually not clinically significant

When it is high

Hepatocellular injury, MI, muscle damage, hemolysis. AST:ALT >2 suggests alcoholic liver
