About

Serum bicarbonate, the metabolic side of acid-base balance. Falls in metabolic acidosis and rises in compensation for chronic CO2 retention.

When it is low

Metabolic acidosis: DKA, lactic acidosis, renal failure, diarrhea

When it is high

Metabolic alkalosis: vomiting, diuretics, hyperaldosteronism
