A breakdown product of clot, useful mainly for its NEGATIVE result: it rules out thrombosis in a low-risk patient and proves nothing when raised.

Low probability of VTE (good negative predictive value)

When it is high

VTE (DVT/PE), DIC, surgery, trauma, pregnancy, malignancy
