About

A protein that mops up free haemoglobin. It falls in haemolysis, which is what makes a low value useful rather than a high one.

When it is low

haemolysis - haptoglobin is consumed binding free haemoglobin. Also liver disease

When it is high

Acute phase response, inflammation, malignancy - which can mask concurrent haemolysis
