Hepatitis B surface antigen, showing current infection. Checked before starting and before stopping tenofovir or emtricitabine, since stopping can cause a hepatitis flare.

When it is low

Negative: no evidence of current HBV infection

When it is high

positive: test before starting and before stopping tenofovir or emtricitabine - withdrawal can cause a severe hepatitis flare. Also screen before rituximab and other immunosuppression
