A genotype checked BEFORE abacavir. Carriers develop a hypersensitivity reaction that can be fatal on re-exposure, so a positive result rules the drug out permanently.

When it is low

Negative: abacavir may be used

When it is high

positive: abacavir is contraindicated - severe and potentially fatal hypersensitivity
