The percentage of haemoglobin carrying oxygen. It sits on a steep curve, so a small fall below 90% means a large drop in oxygen tension.

When it is low

Hypoxemia (see pO₂ causes). <90% = respiratory failure

When it is high

Normal on room air. May be falsely normal in CO poisoning
