About

Parathyroid hormone, interpreted together with calcium: the pair tells you whether a calcium abnormality is driven by the parathyroid glands or by something else.

When it is low

Hypoparathyroidism, post-surgical, hypomagnesaemia. Interpret always alongside calcium

When it is high

Primary hyperparathyroidism if calcium is high; secondary if calcium is low or normal - vitamin D deficiency or chronic kidney disease
