About

Serum folate, the other haematinic behind a macrocytic anaemia. It reflects recent intake, so a red cell folate is the better measure of stores.

When it is low

Deficiency: macrocytic anaemia, neural tube defect risk. Depleted by methotrexate, trimethoprim, phenytoin and sulfasalazine
