About

Serum sodium, which is really a measure of water balance rather than salt. A high glucose dilutes it and the value must be corrected before interpreting.

When it is low

Hyponatremia: SIADH, heart failure, cirrhosis, diuretics, psychogenic polydipsia

When it is high

Hypernatremia: dehydration, diabetes insipidus, excess Na intake
