Heart Rate
For education. Check every result.
Anatium is a study resource, not medical advice. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prescription or a substitute for a clinician who has seen the patient. Check every number against a current local protocol before it touches anyone, and never act on a result you cannot reproduce yourself.
Reference range
| Adolescent & adult (12+ years) | 60 to 100 bpm |
| Child (1-12 years) | 70 to 120 bpm |
| Infant (<1 year) | 100 to 160 bpm |
| Neonate (<28 days) | 120 to 160 bpm |
About
How fast the heart is beating. Rate alone says little without rhythm and context, and a normal rate does not exclude shock in someone on a beta-blocker.
When it is low
Bradycardia: May indicate heart block, hypothyroidism, athletic conditioning, or medication effect (beta-blockers)
When it is high
Tachycardia: May indicate fever, pain, anxiety, dehydration, anemia, hyperthyroidism, or cardiac arrhythmia
How it is measured
Palpate pulse for 30 sec × 2 or use pulse oximeter. Note rhythm regularity.
