Reference range

Range0 to 4 cm

About

The height of the venous column above the sternal angle, an estimate of right atrial filling. Raised in fluid overload, low in depletion.

When it is low

Low/flat JVP: Hypovolemia

When it is high

Elevated (>4cm above sternal angle): RV failure, fluid overload, tamponade, SVC obstruction

How it is measured

Measure with patient at 45°. Add 5cm for RA level. Observe for hepatojugular reflux.
