About

Systolic minus diastolic. A NARROW pulse pressure suggests low stroke volume or vasoconstriction; a wide one suggests aortic regurgitation or a stiff aorta.

When it is low

Narrow PP (<25% SBP): Suggests low stroke volume - shock, tamponade, CHF, aortic stenosis

When it is high

Wide PP (>50% SBP): Suggests increased stroke volume - aortic regurgitation, hyperthyroidism, fever, anemia

How it is measured

PP = SBP - DBP. Reflects stroke volume and arterial compliance.
